A teenager stabbed to death at the weekend has been named as a Wigan schoolboy.
Fifteen-year-old John Marsh suffered severe stab wounds after a late-night incident on Saturday.
Despite the best efforts of police officers, paramedics and hospital specialists, John, a pupil at Golborne High School, died in hospital shortly afterwards.
Police have confirmed they were called to Hempstead Close in St Helens at about 11.40pm.
The scene remained sealed off by police yesterday following a series of detailed forensic examinations and a weapon has been recovered.
John Marsh is believed to have only recently moved to the Sutton Heath area of St Helens from his native Golborne to live with his father.
David Lythgoe, headteacher at Golborne High School, said: “The school community is greatly shocked by this tragic incident. John was a very popular and charismatic young man, well known by all year groups in school.
“He was outgoing and confident, able to mix comfortably with adults and pupils alike. He will be greatly missed by all in school.
“Assemblies have been held for the pupils and support is in place for those closest to him and who are affected most. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
The defendant was remanded in custody until a further hearing on Tuesday, December 1 at St Helens Youth Court, for committal to Liverpool Crown Court on January 4.
A 44-year-old woman, who had been arrested in connection with John’s death and on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, has been bailed pending further inquiries.
